GREENLAND

(84,000 square miles long)

What are they?

An area of land that is surrounded on all sides by water.

How are they made?

There are six different types of islands.

Islands are created when piles of lava rise from the ocean floor. They can also be created when sections of a continent break off, as Earth shifts, and the land is surrounded by water on all sides.

Did you know?

A group of islands is called an archipelago.

A tiny island is called an islet.

Because of their isolation, islands are often home to unique populations wildlife.
