 About Me

Once upon a time, a little girl said, "I want to be a teacher," and someone replied, "There is no better job in the world."
And that was how it all began.
I’m Jessica, a proud Appalachian State alum and future teacher. I’m passionate about providing students with meaningful literacy opportunities that open doors for them to further explore the world. Because of this passion, I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Reading Education. This blog is an artifact of that graduate program, and it will be a place where I reflect on books, materials, and information as I prepare to take what I learn into my own classroom. It is my hope that this blog will be a place where my peers, professors, and current professionals alike may come together as a community to consider, and enhance, the literary world in which we immerse both ourselves and our students.

A few of my favorite things

I love my family. I grew up in Trinity, North Carolina with my parents and my little brother. My dad is an accountant who coaches baseball in his free time. My mom is a kindergarten teacher. She actually taught at my elementary school while I was growing up!
I love being a big sister. My little brother, Zach, was born when I was five years old. While he annoyed me occasionally when we were younger, he is one of my best friends now. He enjoys playing baseball, and he never fails to crack me up with all of his jokes.
I love Appalachian State. I attended Appalachian for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees- and I am so glad that I did! I met some of my best friends in Boone. Our favorite thing to do together was cheer on our Mountaineers at the Appalachian football games!
I love strawberries. In case the name of my website didn't already give it away, you should know that I basically love anything and everything strawberry. It's my favorite fruit, but I am equally as excited about clothes and home decor with strawberries on it as well.
I love reading and the Baltimore Orioles. I have loved reading ever since I can remember, and I enjoy it even more now that I am older. My favorite place to read is on the beach with my feet in the sand! I have also grown up watching baseball and cheering on the Baltimore Orioles with my family.

 A fun experience

While at App State, I had the opportunity to participate in an activity called "Breaking Boards" with my learning community. It was so much fun, but you definitely shouldn't try it without the supervision of a trained expert!

 What I look like

I have blonde hair... just like my momma!

I have blue eyes, and so do all of my family members.

I am short. I'm only 5 foot 2 inches tall (But my license says that I am taller than that!)

You can normally find me wearing neutral colored clothes. black, white, navy, and Gray are some of my favorites.

 What I am like...

I am outgoing. I love to socialize and constantly be surrounded by people. I enjoy talking and laughing constantly. I would definitely consider myself an extrovert which means that I get my energy from being around other people!
I am organized. I like the things in my life to be clean and in order. To-do lists make my heart super happy! I prefer to color coordinate things for school, and I like to pick out my outfit the night before I go anywhere. I also love, love, love my planner because it helps me to keep my whole life in order!
I am compassionate. I really enjoy caring for other people whether that means offering them a hug after a long day or a listening ear. I genuinely enjoy sharing in the excitement of others during their success and triumphs as well as supporting their efforts.
I am kind. One of favorite things to do is build people up with words that affirm their significance in my life and value in the world. I especially love to do this through hand-written notes and letters!

Some things I am not fond of are...

IMG_2405.jpg
Bananas: I've tried to like bananas so many times because they are so good for you, but I really dislike the texture of them. Fortunately, I love basically every other fruit!
Horses: I have been terrified of horses my entire life, but I'm not exactly sure why. The funny thing about this fear is that one of my best friends in college was actually a member of App State's equestrian team, so she competed in horse shows.
Sweet Tea: I am very southern, but I actually hate sweet tea.
Snow: I loved the snow before I came to college, but after living in Boone for five years I am over it! My ideal snow day involves sitting in my pjs, reading a book, and sipping on a cup of hot chocolate (extra marshmallows, please!) - not digging my car out of several feet of snow to go to class.

Other things you should know about me:

I believe the book is better than the movie. Always- no exceptions.

Despite this belief, I love movies! Watching movies is one of my favorite things to do with friends.

I love ice cream... two scoops in a waffle cone, please!

I have never eaten a twinkie, and I don't really feel as if I am missing out on much.
